Warhawk Women Edged by Loras

August 29, 2014

The 19th ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team lost a tight battle with 22nd ranked Loras College 1-0 Friday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.  The Duhawks will take home the "Hawk Cup", the traveling trophy at stake when the two teams meet, for the third time in four years.

Right out of the gates the Warhawks put pressure on the Duhawk defense.  In the first ten minutes UW-Whitewater tallied four corner kicks and two shots.  One shot, a header by Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) off of a Sierra High (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) corner kick, glanced off the crossbar.

The teams fought back-and-forth for the remainder of the half with neither team making their way onto the scoreboard.

The teams traded shots early in the second half but all were off target. Loras finally slid a long pass up the middle and junior Katie Truesdale finished the job to make it 1-0 with less than 20 minutes to play.

The Warhawks managed a corner kick with less than thirty seconds to go but Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East)'s header sailed just wide and the Duhawks held on to win 1-0.

Head Coach Ryan Quamme remarked after the game, "I thought we played well.  It's early in the season and I just don't think we finished a couple of chances, and Loras finished their chance.  I was proud of our women and I thought they fought hard throughout the match."

The Warhawks outshot Loras 10-9 and earned ten corner kicks to the Duhawks' three.

UW-Whitewater (0-1-0) will host Concordia (Wis.) next Wednesday, September 3 at Fiskum Field at 7:00 pm.
