Women’s Soccer Opens 2014 Season With Win
The women's soccer team opened the 2014 campaign with a 2-1 victory against UMass Dartmouth in a non-conference contest at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Friday afternoon.
Johnson & Wales got on the board first when sophomore Sara Kate Matthews (Northborough, Mass.) sent a crossing pass to senior Toriana Foster (Honolulu, Hawaii). Foster then buried a shot into the far left corner to put the Wildcats up 1-0 at the 37:57 mark. JWU took the one goal lead heading into halftime despite being out shot 5-3 in the stanza.
The Wildcats added to their lead early in the second half as Foster fed a pass to junior Mackenzie Flynn (San Clemente, Calif.) who lofted in a shot over the keeper's head at the 51:40 mark for the 2-0 advantage.
Senior Maura Gonsalves (Dartmouth, Mass.) put UMass on the board in the 82nd minute when she converted a penalty kick after a JWU foul to cut the lead to 2-1. It would not be enough, however as JWU held on for the 2-1 victory.
Junior Alex Place (East Greenwich, R.I.) made two saves in the win for JWU while junior Alexa Rose (Lancaster, Pa.) had four saves for the Wildcats. Freshman Madison Boucher (Southampton, Mass.)made four stops in the setback for UMass Dartmouth.
With the win Johnson & Wales is now 1-0 while UMass Dartmouth falls to 0-1 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, September 2nd when they travel to Nichols for a non-conference contest starting at 4:00 p.m.
