Yale Holds Off Quinnipiac 3-2

September 19, 2015

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Kylie Stannard had to wait until the final second ticked off the Reese Stadium clock to celebrate his first win as the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Yale men’s soccer team.

It didn’t look like it was going to be that tense. Dylan Onderdonk-Snow’s goal at 75:16 gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead over Quinnipiac, and Yale was doing a great job protecting it in the final minutes.

QU’s Ryan Scheiderman, though, added a bit of drama, scoring with 19 seconds left, but Yale calmly cleared the ensuing kickoff down to the Quinnipiac end to secure an impressive 3-2 win over the two-time defending MAAC regular season champion Bobcats before a big crowd of 1,206 at Reese.

“Tonight was a great battle between local rivals and these types of games normally come down until the final seconds as shown tonight,” said Stannard, who wanted the focus to be on his players. “I'm extremely proud of our team for this win and nobody deserves this more. They have worked relentlessly for the past eight months and it's very important for them to taste some success from their hard work.”

Yale (1-4) played a terrific first half and had a 2-0 lead at the intermission. The two goals came a little over three minutes apart. Ollie Iselin struck first at 30:15. He settled a long forward pass from Tyler Detorie and chipped a shot over goalkeeper Triston Henry’s head. The ball rolled into the net just before a Quinnipiac defender could clear it away.

Josh Totte scored a pretty goal at 33:21 to make it 2-0. He took a feed from Cameron Kirdzik on the wing, and rifled a shot from a difficult angle that deflected off the post and in.

The Bobcats (0-4-1) applied good pressure early in the second half and were rewarded at 69:57 when Yale was whistled for a foul in the box. Tobias Esche banged home the penalty kick to cut the deficit to one.

Yale, though, responded less than six minutes later when Onderdonk-Snow one-timed an Archie Kinnane corner kick past Henry at 75:16.

From there, the Bulldogs did a good job keeping possession, until the final minute when Quinnipiac added the late goal.

“Our goal was to have a full 90 minute performance tonight and outside of the last minute of the game, we did very well,” Stannard said. “That will still serve as a good teaching and learning opportunity but fortunately we had done enough to win the game. I'm so happy for these guys and I hope this is the first of more positive results.”

Freshman Kees Schipper made his first career start in goal for Yale. He was forced to make only three saves but did an excellent job intercepting and deflecting away crosses.

The Bulldogs are back on the road on Wednesday when they play at Iona. Kickoff is slated for 4:30 p.m.
