Golden Bears beat USF men

SAN FRANCISCO – California defender A.J. Soares was involved in all three Golden Bears’ goals, scoring two and assisting on the other, as Cal defeated San Francisco, 3-0, in the Bay Area Classic on Thursday night at Negoesco Stadium. The Bears, who are on a three-game winning streak, improved their record to 4-1-0 after the non-conference victory. The Dons
fell to 2-2-0.
Soares, a junior, matched his entire scoring output from the 2008 season against San Francisco. Including an assist from his freshman year, Soares had a total of two goals and two assists in his Cal career before tonight.
Junior midfielder Davis Paul put Cal on the scoreboard first, with an assist by Soares, at the 12:56 mark with his second goal of the season.
After a USF foul, Soares converted a penalty kick at 21:06, and Cal eventually took its 2-0 lead into halftime.
At 49:17, junior midfielder Demitrius Omphroy’s corner kick found Soares, who volleyed the ball past Dons goalkeeper Brendan Roslund for the final goal of the night.
Cal’s concludes the Bay Area Classic with a match against Santa Clara at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley. The Broncos fell to Stanford, 2-0, in the other Bay Area Classic match on Thursday night.
