Virginia men defeat Wake Forest

September 19, 2009
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  Mike Volk’s goal in the 25th minute proved to be the difference as No. 20 Virginia defeated second-ranked Wake Forest 1-0 on Friday night at Spry Stadium.

With the loss, the Demon Deacons drop to 3-1-1 and 1-1-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Virginia improves to 4-1-0 and 1-1-0 in league play.

The game was also the Genna Wiley Memorial Match as Wake Forest honored the memory of Genna Wiley, the late wife of former men’s soccer trainer, Steve Wiley. The Demon Deacons wore pink Nike jerseys, which were auctioned off in a silent auction held during the game. The auction raised more than $3,000 for the North Carolina Triad affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Virginia got the only goal of the game in the 25th minute off a corner kick. Neil Barlow’s corner found Volk inside the six-yard box. Volk was about to get just enough on the ball to send it trickling over the goal line for the only goal of the game. Wake Forest had several chances to equalize, but were unable to find the tying goal.

The loss snaps Wake Forest’s home unbeaten streak at 35 straight games, the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history. Before Friday night, Wake’s last loss at home came to Maryland on September 23, 2006.

Corben Bone led the Demon Deacons with three shots, including a shot on goal. Austin da Luz, Andy Lubahn, Luke Norman and Zack Schilawski each attempted two shots.

Akira Fitzgerald suffered his first loss of the season in goal for the Demon Deacons, allowing one goal and making four saves. Diego Restrepo earned the victory for Virginia, recording his second shutout of the season and making five saves.

The shot totals in the game were nearly identical as Virginia attempted 14 shots, compared to 13 for Wake Forest. The Cavaliers had six shots on goal, while the Deacs had five shots on frame.

Wake Forest had the first quality chance of the game in the 15th minute. Lubahn sent a cross to the middle of the field that found Schilawski. Schilawski passed the ball back to Anthony Arena, who unleashed a shot from 20 yards out that required a save by the Virginia keeper.

The Cavaliers grabbed the lead in the 25th minute on Volk’s first goal of the season. Barlow played a corner kick into a crowd of people inside the six-yard box. Volk was able to get a foot on it and send it past a diving Fitzgerald to put Virginia in front 1-0.

Virginia opened the second half with a good chance to double its lead in the 48th minute. Jonathan Villanueva attempted a header from eight yards out that went over the head of Akira Fitzgerald, who had come off his goal line. Justin Lichtfuss was at the goal and was able to clear the ball away to keep the score at 1-0.

The attempts continued for Virginia as Will Bates attempted a shot in the 50th minute that was saved by Fitzgerald and sent over the endline for a corner kick.

Wake Forest had a chance to tie the game in the 54th minute. Schilawski had a shot from 22 yards out in the center of the field, but Restrepo made a nice diving save, forcing a Demon Deacon corner kick

Bone had an opportunity to tie the game in the 82nd minute, but another save by Restrepo kept the Demon Deacons scoreless. Bone lofted a shot from 20 yards out on the left side of the field and Restrepo was able to get just enough of the ball to send it over the crossbar for a corner kick.

On the ensuing corner kick, da Luz was able to get a head on the ball inside the penalty area, but Restrepo again was there for the save.

The Demon Deacons had one last look at an equalizer in the 89th minute but Lubahn’s shot from the top of the 18 was saved by Restrepo as the Cavaliers held on for the 1-0 win.

Wake Forest returns to action on Wednesday, September 23, playing host to Elon at 7 p.m.
