Indiana men beat Wisconsin
September 26, 2009
MADISON, Wis. – For the third time this season and second time in as many games, sophomore Will Bruin put home the game-winning score in a 1-0 victory for No. 13 Indiana at Wisconsin Friday night. Indiana improves to 4-2-1 overall and opens Big Ten play at 1-0. The Badgers drop to 2-3-2 and 0-1 in conference action.
A crowd of 1,703 was on hand for the match, the sixth-largest crowd in complex history and the largest crowd since the 1997 season. This was the first meeting between the two schools since former IU player and coach Todd Yeagley took over as head coach of Wisconsin in December 2008.
Bruin’s fifth goal of the season came at 56:43, putting the Hoosiers up 1-0. The play began with a long serve from Tommy Meyer out of the back. Bruin got underneath the ball and broke away from a pair of defenders, easily slotting the ball home.
Just five minutes earlier Bruin had taken a shot that was tipped out by UW goalkeeper Alex Horwath. Andy Adlard was there to take the second shot but his attempt was again stopped on a tip save by Horwath.
Darren Yeagle, who was making his first start of the season, broke free at 55:30 and unleashed a bullet that was scooped up by Horwath.
Neil Wilmarth had a shot saved with 18:30 to play in the second stanza, IU’s eighth on-goal look of the match.
The game began with Andy Adlard’s free kick in the fifth minute that Alex Horwath dropped to his right to scoop up.
The Hoosiers nearly had a goal courtesy of Wisconsin in the ninth minute when a ball played back went over the defense and Horwath slipped while trying to retrieve the ball. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers it rolled harmlessly to the left of the goal, setting up a corner kick. Adlard got a ball in the mixer that Alexander and Kelly both got a foot on, but the first shot was blocked while the second attempt was saved by Horwath.
With 19 minutes left in the half, the Hoosiers had three corner kicks in a one-minute span but came up empty on each try. On Adlard’s first attempt, Tommy Meyer drove a header low at the net but the shot was blocked by a UW defender. Alexander’s shot on the second corner was tipped out by Horwath, and the third corner was cleared.
Indiana led the shot tally 5-2, at the end of the first half with four of those five attempts on goal. Adlard led the charge with two on-goal looks. The Hoosiers finished the game up 12-8 in shots, with eight of those 12 shots on frame. Bruin and Adlard finished the game with three shots each.
The Hoosiers finally return home after five straight road matches as they take on No. 20 Kentucky Tuesday night at 7 p.m. IU will play two of its next three matches on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
