Blue Devil men highlight exciting weekend of college soccer
October 5, 2009

With another week of college action in the books, we take a deeper look at what transpired this past weekend, from marquee matchups to surprising upsets. We’ve got your key questions and answers right here.

Most impressive win: The Duke Blue Devil men pulled off a juicy 2-0 victory over the defending national champion Maryland Terrapins on Saturday. Freshman Ryan Finley and senior Trae Harrison tallied second-half goals as head coach John Kerr’s team remained unbeaten at home.

There are few pushovers in the ACC, and Duke, 17th in our latest ranking, is the latest example of the conference’s depth.

Beatdown(s) of the week:
On the women’s side, Portland dominated in National Football League fashion with a 7-0 stomping of Montana. In similar fashion, the Louisville men used a couple field goals to run roughshod over DePaul 6-0.

Marquee match: In a rematch of the distant but still classic 2004 College Cup final, our eighth-ranked UC Santa Barbara dispatched of No. 12 Indiana 3-0. Big West leading goal scorer Michael Nonni recorded one goal and an assist and David Walker added another score as the Gauchos reversed the outcome of that famed 2004 game.

Team on the rise: The Washington Husky women have slowly climbed our poll (they’re now 14th) after now going six matches without a loss. The Huskies will begin their Pac-10 schedule Friday with Washington State, and whether they keep taking steps forward or receive a cold dose of reality remains to be seen.

I’ve fallen, can I get up?:
Didn’t the St. John’s Red Storm start the season as our second-ranked men’s program? Yeah, that was before they bungee jumped into mediocrity. St. John’s(m) hasn’t won since Sept. 18 and now sit at No. 39. Will the slide continue?

{mosimage:250}We do exist, you know?:
Monmouth is a small private school located in West Long Branch, New Jersey. We mention as much because that’s probably more than you knew previously.

Quietly, the men’s program has yet to lose a game. They're 11th in our poll in case anyone has noticed. Maybe matchups against Sacred Heart and Fairleigh-Dickinson(m) aren’t the sexiest, but the Hawks (yes, it’s the Monmouth ‘Hawks’) have beaten the teams in front of them, and that’s all you can ask.

What do you have against the state of Alabama?: The LSU women took out both the Alabama and Auburn programs last week by a combined score of 5-0. That just isn’t right.

Quote of the week: “I had to learn not to take it personally.”
