Gardner-Webb women defeat Francis Marion

BOILING SPRINGS, NC – Gardner-Webb University scored a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 victory over Francis Marion University, Wednesday evening (Sept. 30) in women's non-conference soccer action.

Francis Marion drops to 1-11-1, while the Bulldogs improve to 6-5-0.  The Patriots will next play on Oct. 11 at Eastern Kentucky University.

Sarah Keyser headed in a pass from Megan Tremblay at the 16:43 mark to put GWU up 1-0.  Stephanie Benshoof tallied an unassisted goal on a free kick in the 67th minute to account for the other goal.

Gardner-Webb outshot Francis Marion 19-10 and led 9-5 in corner kicks.

Sophomore forward Kiley Williams had four of FMU’s shots, including the team’s only shot-on-goal which came in the 37th minute.  Junior Rebecca Nelson hit the crossbar with a shot in the 34th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Casey Durham returned to action for the Patriots and recorded two saves.  GWU goalkeeper Samantha Rupert did not register a save while posting the shutout.
