UNC Wilmington women defeat James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 2, 2009 -- Junior Megan Novak (College Park, Md./Good Counsel) scored the winning goal midway through the overtime period as UNC Wilmington took down James Madison 1-0 in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer Friday evening at the JMU Soccer Complex.

JMU and UNCW both moved to 6-5-0 overall and 2-1-0 in CAA play.

Junior Chelsea Godbout (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) began the final play after she collected a errant pass from a JMU defender and played a ball through traffic to freshman Stephanie Rose (Jacksonville, N.C./White Oak). Rose carried the ball into the box and sent a ball across the goal that Novak was able to bury in the bottom-right corner of the goal.

The Dukes consistently threatened, outshooting the Seahawks 19-10, but rarely got off a clean look. JMU’s best chance came in the 20th minute when junior Teresa Rynier (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) took a shot from about 20 yards that struck the left post.

UNCW freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Hunter (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) recorded 10 saves to earn her first career shutout. Redshirt junior Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) made four saves for the Dukes in the loss.

The Seahawks posted their first win over the Dukes in Harrisonburg, where JMU had won the previous eight meetings.  .JMU leads the all-time series 15-3.

This was JMU’s second consecutive overtime game. The Dukes defeated Towson 3-2 at home on Sept. 27
