ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The University of
Massachusetts women's soccer team had its five-game unbeaten steak snapped on Friday night as the squad fell to Saint Louis, 4-0, in Atlantic 10 action. Following the setback, the Minutewomen are now 3-5-2 overall, 2-1-0 in the A-10, while the Billikens improve to 4-5-2, 1-1-1 in conference play.
Saint Louis' first goal came in the 14th minute, off one of the squad's three corner kicks in the contest. Ashley Hayes' corner was brought down by Andrea Barklage and Barklage sent it over to Ashley Brazill, who tapped in from inside the six-yard box.
Then at the 36:26 mark, Barklage scored off a long feed from Susan Frederickson on the the left-hand side of the goal.
With the first half winding down, Saint Louis struck again as Sally Sinclair sent a perfectly placed shot inside far post off a pass from Kelly Waeckerle at 43:09.
The Billikens' final tally, Barklage's second of the match, was headed in off a restart in the 67th minute with Brazill earning an assist on the play.
UMass' best chance to score came in the final minute of the contest as junior Therese Smith (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) fired a shot that hit the post. Redshirt junior Meghan Gould (Danvers, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) and junior Ashley Hamel (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schulyerville) recorded one shot apiece, both of which were placed on frame.
Freshman Emily Cota (Green Lane, Pa./ Upper Perkiomen) totaled 10 saves as the Minutewomen were outshot 28-3. Hannah Perry made two stops for Saint Louis in her 78:47 in net. Fouls were 11-4 against the Billikens.
UMass will next play at Charlotte on Sunday, Oct. 4, beginning at 4 p.m.
