Portland women continue to blow out opponents

Portland women continue to blow out opponents
October 12, 2009

Another week down, and plenty more to go. It’s time to recap some of the marquee matchups and shocking events that unfolded this past week in the world of college soccer.

Marquee match: Two men's College Cup finalists hooked up Friday night when North Carolina (2) played host to Wake Forest (4). The match lived up to its billing and ended in a 2-2 tie. Andy Lubahn scored for the Demon Deacons in the 81st minute to send the game into overtime. Michael Farfan added a goal and an assist in a meeting between two ACC teams likely to cross paths again.

Tie goes to the Aztecs: The San Diego State men came through with a momentous 2-2 draw against UCLA on Sunday. The underdog Aztecs played with a man down for the final 27 minutes of the match, including two overtimes, to come out with their third tie of the season - and most impressive. UCLA (6) was actually on the ropes late until David Estrada scored a game-tying goal in the 82nd minute.

Beatdown of the week: We may have to officially change this category to "Portland women beatdown of the week." The Pilots rolled over Gonzaga 7-0 just one week after clobbering Montana by the same score. In other news, the other West Coast Conference teams have filed a petition to have Portland moved out of the conference. We kid.

Every second counts
: Jess Rostedt’s dramatic goal with one second remaining in regulation gave the Virginia women (25) a 2-2 tie with Maryland (23) on Thursday. Talk about time management.

Streak of the week: The Central Michigan women have put together a string of nine consecutive shutouts, tying a MAC record set by Ohio University in 2004. Ranked 52nd by TopDrawerSoccer.com, CMU is 6-0 in MAC play for the first time in school history.

She’s all heart
: Idaho State women’s redshirt sophomore Ashley Askwig has been sidelined this season due to a heart condition, but that hasn’t stopped her from being a model teammate. Read HERE.

Shocking story: All was well with California women’s coach Neil McGuire; then it wasn’t, now it is. Read HERE.

Quote of the week: “Yeah, I’d say we’re better than we were. We have an extra year of playing together and knowing what to expect.”
- California Captain A.J. Soares, comparing this year’s men's team to that of 2008.
