Northwestern women lose to OSU

October 14, 2009
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Northwestern controlled the run of play for much of the second half, but a header
goal off a corner kick in the final minute sent the ’Cats to a 1-0 loss at No. 25 Ohio State Sunday.

The Buckeyes took advantage of their last of 11 corner kicks in the match to score the day’s only
goal. Lauren Granberg elevated over the Northwestern defense to get her head on the ball and drive
it into the net with 49 seconds remaining in regulation.

Jill Dunn (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) took a career-high four shots in the match, including
one that nearly snuck inside the far post in the 81st minute. Two of Dunn’s shots were on goal.

Northwestern (4-8-2, 1-3-1 Big Ten) had a couple of chances off Ohio State (10-2-1, 3-1-0)
turnovers. Midway through the second half, Alicia Herczeg (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) beat the
Buckeye keeper to a free ball and tried to cross to Sam Greene (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica)
for an empty-net chance but the junior was unable to reach the ball before an OSU defender cleared
it from the box.

NU also had a strong opportunity midway through the first half when Jessica Palo (Ames, Iowa/Ames)
took advantage of a Buckeye turnover and cruised past the back line for an open look at the net.
However, Ohio State recovered in time to prevent Palo from getting a shot off.

The teams battled through a scoreless first half that saw a couple of big defensive stands from the
’Cats. Northwestern didn’t allow a shot off six Ohio State corners in the opening stanza and
Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) easily stopped the only shot on goal she faced, a
header from the Buckeyes’ Caitlyn Martin.

Edwards finished with three saves on the day.

The ’Cats return home to Lakeside Field for their next match on Sun., Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. against
Michigan State. Admission and parking are free for all regular season women’s soccer matches.
