Los Angeles, CA – A 15th-minute goal by senior forward David Estrada was all No. 4/2 UCLA needed in a 1-0 shutout victory over No. 10/13 California on Friday night in front of 1,807 fans at UCLA’s Drake Stadium. Bruin goalkeeper Brian Perk, who was taken to the hospital during his last game on Sunday after being kicked in the face, came back to play 90 minutes of shutout soccer to earn the victory.

The Bruins dominated play in the first half of the game, outshooting the Golden Bears 12-1 in the first half and 19-8 overall. Estrada had a good opportunity in the 10th minute with a header in front of the goal. His sharp shot was saved at point blank range, however, by Cal goalkeeper David Bingham. Five minutes later, Estrada found himself with another goal-scoring opportunity, and after receiving a flick from Kyle Nakazawa, he put in a shot to the far post from the top of the box to give UCLA the 1-0 advantage.

The second half was more evenly-played, with both teams recording seven shots. UCLA nearly doubled its lead in the 74th minute when Sean Alvarado headed in a Nakazawa cross, but the goal was waved off due to an offsides call. Cal’s best scoring chance came at 78:36 when Hector Jimenez sent in an on-target shot that Perk had to leap to save. Perk had three saves in the contest, while Bingham had eight for Cal.

Nakazawa had his school-record tying goal-scoring streak snapped at five games, but his assist on the Estrada goal kept alive his point scoring streak, improving it to eight games, which ranks fifth-best in school history. Nakazawa has provided a goal or assist on UCLA’s last eight goals scored. He nearly scored in the 79th minute on a free kick, bending the shot around the Cal wall, but it just barely missed high.

 

UCLA (7-1-2, 2-0-2 in the Pac-10) will next host No. 18/19 Stanford on Sunday at 2:30 pm, while Cal (8-4-0, 2-2-0) vists San Diego State.
