Virginia Tech women fall to Boston College

Updated: October 18, 2009
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 16 Hokies dropped their first match of the season at Thompson Field, as the No. 8 Boston College Eagles topped Virginia Tech, 1-0. Though the match remained close for the full 90 minutes, the Hokies were unable to rally together and match the Eagles’ score.

Boston College (12-2-1, 4-2-1 ACC) got out to an early lead, as Gina DiMartino netted the only goal of the game in the ninth minute. DiMartino gathered a deflected ball just in front of the net and slipped it under Tech’s keeper Kristin Carden and into the bottom right corner of the net. The Eagles’ Amy Caldwell earned the assist on the play.

The game remained close for the rest of the first half as Tech (11-4-0, 4-2-0 ACC) wrapped up the half having taken seven shots, four on goal. Boston College took eight shots, three on goal.

The ball was evenly possessed for most of the second half, as each team’s defense was hard at work. Though the Hokies were unable to get the ball on target in the half, they finished the game with 10 total shots and allowed Boston College just one shot on goal in the half. The Eagles finished the game with 13 total shots.

Junior defender Kelly Lynch worked hard all game, leading the Hokie defense, as she was all over the field and a big part of limiting the Eagles’ opportunities.

Carden finished the match with three saves, while Boston College’s keeper, Jillian Mastroianni made four saves on the day.

The Hokies will hit the road next week for their final two road games of the season. Their first match of the week will be in Winston-Salem, N.C., where they will take on No. 6 Wake Forest at 7 p.m.
