HOUSTON, Texas - Friday's first-place battle between
Utah Valley and Houston Baptist ended in a 1-1, double-overtime tie, leaving both teams an unbeaten 2-0-1 halfway through the Great West Conference regular season.
The Wolverines (3-9-1) and Huskies (6-6-2) both entered the match with GWC wins at North and South Dakota and, in addition to still hosting both Dakota schools, will have a rematch on Monday, Oct. 26 at UVU's Clyde Field in Orem.
"Houston Baptist is a good team. They're athletic with a lot of speed," said UVU head coach Brent Anderson. "It really was a good match. The girls are disappointed with the tie but happy with the effort."
After a scoreless first half, Houston Baptist scored its goal in the 59th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Brandi Hart netted her second goal of the season for the Huskies on assists from Arielle Rodriguez and Chelsea Thornhill.
Nicole Archibald tied the game in the 72nd minute on an assist from Brianne Larsen, giving her three goals on the year, tying her with Athena Maher for the team lead.
The Wolverines outshot the Huskies 15-12 overall with HBU owning a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Archibald had seven shots herself, including two on goal.
Hailey Brown started in goal for UVU and had two first-half saves. Tasha Bell played the final 65 minutes and had four saves. Michelle Rich played all 110 minutes at keeper for HBU and finished with three saves.
The Wolverines will stay in the Houston area for a non-conference matchup on Sunday at 10 a.m. MT in Huntsville, Texas against Sam Houston State.
