James Madison men fall to Old Dominion

HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 21, 2009 -- Old Dominion freshman Yannick Smith (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) scored early in the second overtime to give the Monarchs a 1-0 men's soccer win at James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association action Wednesday evening at the JMU Soccer Complex.
Redshirt senior Bobby Foglesong (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) sent a pass down the middle of the field to Smith, who outraced two defenders and beat junior goalkeeper Ken Manahan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) with a 10-yard shot to the lower right corner of the net. The winning score came 2:54 into the second sudden-victory overtime period.
ODU extended its unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1) as the Monarchs improved their overall record to 8-3-2 and their CAA record to 3-2-2.
JMU lost its second game in a row as the Dukes' record dropped to 7-4-2 overall and 2-3-1 in league play.
ODU out-shot JMU 9-3 for the match, but only three of the Monarchs' attempts were on goal. JMU had only one shot that was on goal.
Manahan finished with two saves. ODU junior goalkeeper Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, Va./Edison) had one save as he recorded his seventh shutout of the season and his second consecutive overtime shutout.
