NEWTON, Mass. – Boston College’s Chelsea Regan scored with 2:05 left in the second overtime period to lead the seventh-ranked Eagles to a 2-1 win against No. 11
Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon at the Newton Soccer Field.
With the loss, Wake Forest closes the regular season with a 13-4-2 overall record and a 5-3-2 record in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Boston College is now 15-2-1 and 7-2-1 in the league.
Wake Forest jumped out to an early lead in the 17th minute on Jill Hutchinson’s team-leading 13th goal of the season. Boston College tied the game with a goal from Victoria DiMartino in the 31st minute. After a scoreless second half and first overtime period, Regan scored off a corner kick in the 108th minute to give BC a 2-1 win.
The goal for Hutchinson was also her 35th career goal, breaking the school record, which was previously held by Sarah Kozey, who had 34 career goals. Hutchinson also has 29 points on the season, which leads the team.
Kaley Fountain assisted on the goal from Hutchinson for her team-leading eighth assist of the season. With the assist, Fountain now has 28 points on the season, ranking second on the team.
DiMartino and Regan each scored for Boston College. The goal for DiMartino was her team-leading 14th of the season, while Regan scored for the third time on the year.
Amanda Barasha made a career-high seven saves and allowed two goals for Wake Forest, while Jillian Mastroianni stopped three shots and gave up one goal.
Boston College held a 20-8 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. The Eagles had seven corner kicks, compared to three for the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest grabbed the lead with Hutchinson’s record-breaking goal in the 17th minute. Fountain played a nice pass to Hutchinson, who was able to chip a shot over the Boston College goalkeeper to give the Demon Deacons a 1-0 lead.
Boston College equalized in the 31st minute. DiMartino scored on a shot from 23 yards out to tie the game at one.
After the two teams combined for just five shots in the first half, the game opened up in the second half, with 17 shots being attempted between the two sides. However, neither team was able to score a goal in the second 45 minutes.
The Eagles came out and applied pressure in the opening minutes of the half. Kristen Mewis had two shots that were saved by Barasha in the first five minutes of the second half, while Gina DiMartino hit the post in the 52nd minute.
Wake Forest had its first shot of the second half in the 68th minute when Alisha Woodson put a shot on frame that was saved by Mastroianni.
Casey Luckhurst had one of the best chances for the Demon Deacons in the 77th minute. Fountain played a cross to Luckhurst, who had a look from point blank range. Luckhurst sailed her shot high of the crossbar to keep the game tied.
Allie Sadow had another good opportunity in the 87th minute. Sadow had a good luck from inside the 18-yard box, but Mastroianni was able to kick the ball just wide of the goal.
Wake Forest nearly grabbed the lead near the end of regulation. Caitlin Farrell had a header shot that appeared to be going in the goal. However, Mewis was able to clear the ball away before it rolled over the goal line.
After a quiet first overtime period, Boston College had a pair of shots on goal in the first three minutes of the second overtime period. Victoria DiMartino and Natalie Crutchfield each had shots that were saved by Barasha.
The Eagles claimed the victory on a goal from Regan in the 108th minute. Regan converted off a corner kick from Hannah Cerrone for the golden goal.
The Demon Deacons earned the fifth seed for the 2009 ACC Tournament, which opens Wednesday, November 4, at WakeMed Soccer Park. The official bracket and game times will be announced by the ACC on Monday.
