Providence men among weekend winners
The women's NCAA draw will be announced today and things are starting to take shape on the men's side. It's a perfect time to take a look back in one of our final Refreshers.
Ten Seconds of Fame: The Elizabeth Lambert-New Mexico-BYU story mostly having blown over now. (If you don’t know what story we’re referring to you should venture out of the cave a little more often, or click HERE) There is one positive that came out of the fiasco - for a few days, college soccer was a national story.
Aside from TopDrawerSoccer.com leading the throng of media coverage, many people learned of the incident(s) on SportsCenter - a high mark for college soccer. So while we debate the state of officiating and sportsmanship, let’s acknowledge the silver lining that emerged from unfortunate circumstances.
Record-smashing: Kelley O’Hara produced a hat-trick in Stanford’s season-ending 4-1 victory over California on Sunday to smash the program’s single-season goal-scoring record. O’Hara entered the match tied with Sarah Rafanelli for the record with 20 goals.
In the process of O’Hara’s performance, the Cardinal completed a perfect 20-0 season to become the first Bay Area team to post a perfect regular season since Santa Clara achieved the feat in 1999.
ACC battle: The North Carolina men finished with a share of the conference regular-season title along with Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons completed their regular season with a nice 3-0 victory over Duke.
Of course, none of this will matter much when the conference tournament starts Tuesday, and - speaking to the competition level in the ACC - no one would be shocked if neither team won that.
Big East showdown: The Providence men took down Connecticut 1-0 in a classic overtime affair Saturday during the Big East Tournament.
Matt Marcin scored in the 98th minute to lift the Friars who advanced to the tourney semifinals and now have a great opportunity to carry their momentum into a possible NCAA tournament appearance.
The Huskies, who were the Big East Blue standard during the regular season, now await an NCAA bid when the announcement is made next Monday, Nov. 16.
Make that 12: The Penn State women captured their 12th straight Big Ten title after a 2-0 victory over Michigan on Sunday. The Nittany Lions were already assured a share of the conference crown, but that claimed it all for themselves by extending their unbeaten streak to nine matches.
Penn State hasn’t lost since Sept. 27.
Monmouth: The Hawks wrapped up another great season by wrapping up the Northeast regular season title after a 3-1 win over Mount St. Mary's.
Curiosity and speculation still persists about Monmouth’s ability to hang with top level programs, but until we get the chance to find out for sure a couple weeks from now - long live the little guys.
Quote of the Week: “We can’t get complacent with just 20-0. We want to go 26-0.”
- Stanford striker Kelley O’Hara
