Updated: November 23, 2009
IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 16 seed UC Irvine men’s soccer team (15-7) lost 1-0 to Stanford Sunday night in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship at Anteater Stadium.

Daniel Leon put Stanford up 1-0 in the 36th minute with a bending shot from outside the box on the left side just past sophomore keeper Andrew Fontein’s (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS) hands and just inside the right post. The Cardinal would hold onto their lead even as UCI stepped up the offensive attack and out shot Stanford 6-2 in the second half.

Andrew Fontein had one save for the ‘Eaters. John Moore had five saves for Stanford as he picked up the shutout.

The ‘Eaters conclude the season with a school record tying 15 wins on the year. Stanford advances to face No. 1 seed Akron next Sunday in the Round of 16 in Akron, Ohio.
