Eagles win record 3rd National Soccer title
July 30, 2010

The Eagles under 23 soccer team of Camarillo, CA, defeated Arizona Rush Nike 2-1 at the United States National Soccer Championships in Overland Park, KS, and became only the 2nd women's team in history ever to win three age specific national soccer titles. The Eagles previously won the National crown in 2004 as a U14 team and three years later as U17's. Colorado Rush is the only other team ever to win three titles (1999-2001).

With her 89 year old grandmother having driven 1600 miles from Ojai, CA, to watch her play for a national championship, Bianca Burright (Cal Poly) lofted a corner kick that Courtney Goodson (Irvine(w)) headed into the net to give the Eagles an early advantage.  Amanda Lisberger (Texas) and Charney Burk (UCLA) came within acrobatic saves by the AZ keeper of increasing the lead, while defenders Kelsea Smith (Pepperdine) and Shannon McFadden (Washington State) twice thwarted Rush Nike breakaways. With 15 minutes left in regulation, and the score knotted at one, Emily Cressy (Kansas) led Lindsay Bullock (Long Beach State) across the top of the box and the Eagles center midfielder stroke the ball hard with her left foot. The ball traveled at a 45 degree angle just past the diving hands of the keeper into the side panel of the net for the game winning goal.

"We re-united a month ago as 16 really good college soccer players and this week it was just like old times - winning as a team" explained Eagles captain Amelia Mathis.

"These girls never cease to amaze me", added head coach Vince Thomas, "since they were 13 years old they have understood what it takes to be a champion.  We are proud of the three National titles and look forward to trying for a 4th in 2011. That truly would be historic."
