Oregon State challenging Stanford in Pac-10

Oregon State challenging Stanford in Pac-10
October 19, 2010
Before we start this thing I wanted to send out a personal apology to the Siena College women. With this story last week detailing their undefeated run I invoked the TopDrawer jinx and sent them tumbling to their first two losses of the season.

The Saints fell to Canisius 3-2 in overtime Friday before following it up with a 1-0 loss to Niagara. Coincidence? I think not.

My bad.

Marquee match: The No. 31 Georgia Bulldogs went into South Carolina and came out with a huge SEC victory Friday when they earned a 1-0 win. Alexa Newfield scored an unassisted goal in the third minute and goalkeeper Ashley Baker made six saves to create an interesting logjam in the conference. The No. 14 Gamecocks are now tied with the Gators atop the SEC Eastern with the Bulldogs just behind.

Upset of the week (excluding Siena College): Colorado College had won just once in its previous seven matches heading into Friday’s contest with then Conference USA leader UCF, but the Tigers peaked just in time to knock off the No. 18 Knights 1-0.

Colorado College leading scorer Tiffany Brown (#51 Top 100 Upperclassmen) came through with a goal in the 11th minute and the unheralded program picked up its signature win of the season thus far.

I’ll be watching you:
Keep your eyes on No. 9 Oregon State. Picked in the preseason to finish fifth in the Pac-10, the Beavers are on a surprise run but they shouldn’t sneak up on anyone from here on out. Not with quality match results throughout their entire schedule including ties with No. 7 Boston College and No. 2 North Carolina. Led by potent attacker Chelsea Buckland, Oregon State (11-1-1) is pushing Stanford in the Pac-10 with an upcoming matchup between the programs scheduled for Nov. 5. Mark your calendar.

Still streaking: Portland ran its West Coast Conference winning streak to 24 games, and its home winning mark to 34 after a 1-0 victory over Pepperdine on Sunday. So basically, unless the No. 3 Pilots are playing a nonconference road match, you can count it.

Hostile takeover: New Mexico snatched pole position in the Mountain West Conference following a 1-0 triumph over BYU. The No. 28 Lobos have three remaining games left against the conference’s bottom three teams putting them in good position to claim a regular season title.

A bid farewell:
The California home crowd said their goodbyes to senior Alex Morgan (#4 Top 100 Upperclassmen) on Sunday during special presentation honoring the All-everything player. Morgan will miss the team’s final three home games while she plays with the U.S. senior national team at the CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifying tournament in Cancun, Mexico.

Fittingly, she scored – something the Bears will need when she returns for the NCAA Tournament.
