Notre Dame’s historic streak ends
November 2, 2010
The postseason picture is materializing and we’ve got developments galore after another exciting week of women’s action.
Marquee match: Florida met South Carolina on Friday for the SEC conference championship, with the No. 5 Gators coming out on top 1-0 and grabbing the top seed in the upcoming SEC tourney. Senior Nicky Kit scored on a free kick in the first half and Florida’s defense made it an easy night for goalkeeper Katie Fraine as the Gators won their fifth straight SEC title.
UConn's Elise FugowskiUpset of the week: Connecticut ousted Notre Dame from the Big East Tournament on Sunday in a win that halted a historic run of dominance. Prior to the 2-0 defeat, the No. 8 Fighting Irish had gone 77 straight conference matches without a defeat, the longest in Division I women’s soccer history. Elise Fugowski scored two goals and the Huskies became the first team to beat Notre Dame at home since they joined the Big East 16 years ago.
Stop the Press: The unstoppable Christen Press ran her nation-leading goal total to 21 on Saturday when No. 1 Stanford took down the Alex Morgan-less California Golden Bears 3-0. Press scored twice in the game and has tied her goal total from last season with two contests remaining.
All settled: North Carolina clinched the ACC regular season title with their 2-0 victory over Wake Forest on Sunday, saving the conference from having to divvy up honors for four teams. Virginia, Florida State and Maryland all finished one game behind and will be looking to strike back when the conference tourney begins today.
Poison Ivy: Princeton had a costly slip up against Cornell on Saturday with a 1-0 loss that dropped them one game behind first-place Penn. The two teams will meet for the season finale Nov. 6 when the Tigers can bounce back and claim a share of the league title.
Second wind: Penn State appeared to be out of the running for a 13th straight Big Ten title before a turn of events this past weekend vaulted the Nittany Lions into a tie for first place with Ohio State with one game to play.
The Buckeyes could have won out and denied Penn State, but a loss to Indiana on Sunday put Ohio State in a precarious position. Stay tuned, as we’ll have more on this intriguing race.
