Ranking The Top Pac-10 Mens' Recruiting Classes
March 12, 2009
If the UCLA Bruins aren’t able to improve on last season’s first-round loss in the NCAA tournament it won’t be for a lack of recruiting effort.
The Bruins have restocked the shelves sufficiently, with a class that trumps all others in the Pac-10 Conference.
The defending conference champions are getting offense, defense and everything in between from their incoming freshman class.
Touted San Juan Lightning midfielder Amobi Okugo will bring raw ability along with superb forwards Dakota Collins (United FC), Chandler Hoffman (Birmingham United SA) and Evan Raynr (Real So Cal).
On the defensive side, Gale Agbossoumonde (IMG Soccer Academy) is a major pickup. He’s a force on the backline with his athleticism and intensity and should be an impact player right away. He’ll be joined by defender Matthew Norton (Nomads SC).
Amobi Okugo will join a strong UCLA recruiting class.STANFORD
The Cardinal may not have assembled the quantity of players the Bruins did but it isn’t far behind in quality.
Stanford nabbed standout forward Dersu Abolfathi (L.A. Galaxy), one of the nation’s top recruits. He’s a special goal scorer with star quality and the rare tools to develop into a global player.
Two PDA products, defender Hunter Gorskie, and goalkeeper Rafael Diaz, should provide the team with depth. Both players are national team participants.
As is forward Adam Jahn (Davis Legacy), a goal scorer who has the ideal size and strength to take off at the college level.
Stanford will also add Lake Oswego SC goalkeeper Jason Dodson. Expect the Cardinal to make a jump from the conference’s basement a year ago.
CALIFORNIA
Cal’s successful run into the third round of the tourney last year will bring about anticipation for the coming season, particularly with junior to-be Andrew Wiedeman leading the way.
The new kids won’t hurt either.
Forward John Fitzpatrick (San Diego Surf) will highlight the newbies. He’s one of the top club soccer players in the country, and is a pure goal scorer whose size and speed should translate well to the college level.
Fellow forward Kyle Marsh (Marin FC) could factor into the Golden Bears season, along with strong midfielders Steven Birnbaum (Pateadores SC) and Anthony Salciccia (Santa Clara Sporting)
SAN DIEGO STATE
The Aztecs did well for themselves in grabbing central midfielder Jose Altamirano, a top prospect. He’s a versatile playmaker and attacker and will prove valuable to the team very soon.
His Del Mar Sharks teammate, goalkeeper Blake Hylen, will join him.
OTHERS
Oregon State brings in a big cast of signees but is probably more excited about reigning conference Freshman of the Year, Danny Mwanga, who should produce big things this upcoming season.
Washington finished fourth in the Pac-10 last year, and adds forwards Quinton Beasley (Camas, WA) and Ryan Moore (San Leandro, CA).
