San Diego women draw with UCLA
August 29, 2009
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 15th-ranked University of San Diego women’s soccer team (1-1-1) battled to a 1-1 tie with No. 7 UCLA (0-1-1) Friday evening in a non-conference match at USD’s Torero Stadium in front of an announced crowd of 1,543.
San Diego was able to get on the scoreboard first, as in the 26th minute of action, the UCLA defense pulled down USD’s sophomore forward Stephanie Ochs inside the goal box, which set up a penalty kick situation. Senior midfielder Christine Mock took the penalty kick for the Toreros and put it into the back of the net past a diving Bruin goalkeeper to give USD a 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes later, the Bruins tied things up, as Kara Lang crossed the ball in front of the USD goal box, where Kristina Larson was there to hit a one-timer into the goal to cap the scoring for the day.
After the break, both teams had several golden scoring opportunities not go their way. One of USD’s best opportunities came in the 55th minute of action, as freshman forward Lexi Deol spun around a defender and broke past the entire UCLA backline to have a one-on-one situation with the Bruin goalkeeper, but when she fired off her shot, the UCLA ’keeper was there to make the save to preserve the 1-1 tie.
San Diego had another great scoring opportunity not go their way, as in the second overtime period, Ochs first off a shot from about 25 yards out, and the ball appeared to be out of the reach of the UCLA goalkeeper, but she made a great diving save on the ball, to end the USD scoring threat.
UCLA outshot USD 26-10 and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they travel to Tucson, Ariz. to take on the University of Arizona in a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
