Cal women upset Texas A&M
September 5, 2009
BERKELEY - The No. 14 California women's soccer team upended No. 10 Texas A&M, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian notched the game-winning goal at 69:22. With the win, the Golden Bears improve to 2-1-0 overall while the Aggies drop to 2-2-0. Cal out shot A&M, 11-4, to bring the Bears’ season total to, 31-20, thus far in 2009.
“We had a certain energy and excitement on the team,” McGuire said. “The team also played together. When we play together, we can be very dangerous.”
The Bears had a good look on goal just five minutes into the game when a shot from sophomore midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir, who just returned to Berkeley this week after competing with the Icelandic national team at the European Championship, had a shot that went just high after Kevorkian crossed it to Omarsdottir in the box off a pass from junior forward Alex Morgan.
The squads went into the halftime break knotted, 1-1. The Bears came out firing in the second half, taking eight shots in the second 45 compared to three in the first half.
Junior defender/midfielder Megan Jesolva kept A&M keeper Kristin Arnold on her toes with two shots, one of which resulted in a save for Arnold at 55:34 of the second half. Arnold’s second and final stop of the game moments later off a shot from Kevorkian just before her game-changing score.
The Bears turned the tide in the 70th minute, when Kevorkian fired off a beautiful shot from 18 yards out off the feed from Jesolva. The goal was Kevorkian’s second in three games in 2009 and her second game-winning score.
“My goal felt really good,” Kevorkian said. “Usually I’m not the one to get the pretty goal. When it came off my foot, my heart just swelled.”
The Aggies forced senior keeper Gina Pellegrini, who played all 90 minutes in the box, to make two saves, the first of which came in the 36th minute of the first half when Mary Grace Schmidt fired one in. Pellegrini’s second save, which was her fifth of the young 2009 campaign, occurred off a shot from Jen Kmezich.
The Bears are now 3-2-0 against the Aggies after losing a heartbreaking game, 1-0, last year at A&M.
“I think the Cal program has always been very good,” McGuire said. “I think today was a great performance by the players. They rebounded well from the Portland loss. I think we played with tremendous spirit today. We deserved to win.”
This is the first upset as well as the first win for the Bears against a ranked opponent since defeating No. 16 Santa Clara in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
“It really sent a message to the rest of the nation about what Cal is all about,” Kevorkian said. “We didn’t play well against Portland last weekend so to beat such a competitor like A&M, especially after last year, the result exemplifies what we’re here to do this season.”
Next up, the Bears will take on No. 25 Texas on Sunday at noon at Edwards Stadium. The Longhorns suffered a 2-1 loss to Saint Mary’s in the opening game of the Cal Invitational. Last season, Texas advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
