Fairleigh Dickinson men beat Hofstra
September 6, 2009
TEANECK, NJ- The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team didn't waste any time against Hofstra on Sunday afternoon, scoring four goals in the first half and not looking back as the Knights posted a 4-1 victory at home.
Sophomore Cristian Vasconez (Quito, Ecuador) sent a throw-in to freshman Dominic Reinold (Wesseling, Germany), who found the back left corner of the net to give the Knights a 1-0 edge in the 11th minute of the match.
Eleven minutes later, junior Chris Faraone (Jamesburg, NJ) fed sophomore Paul King (Newcastle, England) the ball from midfield and King fired the ball from 18-yards out on the right side to add another tally to the Knights' score.
The Knights waited only five minutes to put another mark on the board as Reinold and King broke away down the field. King dished it out to Reinold, who blasted a shot from the left side, giving the Knights a 3-0 lead.
In the 41st minute, Vasconez sent a long pass to Reinold, in front of the net, who fed it quickly to King. King's second goal of the game gave the Knights a 4-0 edge heading into the half.
The Pride responded in the second half as Thomas Bekas dished the ball to Johannes Grahn, who found the back of the net to put Hofstra on the board, but it wasn't enough, as the Knights took the 4-1 win.
Junior Majdi Zaineh (Clifton, NJ) made one save between the posts for the Knights, while Greg Cumpstone grabbed seven saves in 90 minutes.
The Knights held an 18-9 advantage in shots, while Hofstra held a slight edge in corner kicks, 6-4.
"The first half was as good a half as any FDU team has played in my tenure here," said Head Coach Seth Roland. "Each goal was better than the previous one. We were able to do this against a very solid Hofstra team. I'm also pleased that we defended well. From the opening whistle to the closing whistle, it was a very good effort by our guys."
The Knights are back in action at the Cal State-Northridge Tournament, where they will face the hosts on Sept. 11 and Cal State- Fullerton on Sept. 13.
