JMU women beat Villanova

August 30, 2010
HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 29, 2010 -- James Madison (2-1-0) got a late goal from junior Yolie Anderson-Golhor (Ottawa, Ontario/Louis-Riel) and edged Villanova (2-1-0) 1-0 in Sunday’s final round of the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational Women’s Soccer Tournament.

In the first game of the day St. John's (1-2-1) and Virginia Commonwealth (1-1-1) battled to a scoreless overtime tie.

The winning goal for the Dukes came with 9:46 left to play and was set up by a pass sent by senior Cate Tisinger (Clifton, Va./Centreville) from the right side of the field into the box.  The pass went to junior Ariana Ruela (Kearny, N.J./Kearny), who directed the ball across the box to Anderson-Golhor.  She sent a six-yard shot past a diving Villanova freshman goalkeeper Jami Kranich (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) into the left corner of the goal.

Villanova had several quality scoring chances in both halves, including a penalty kick in the 55th minute by junior Katie Ryan (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) that was stopped by redshirt senior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East).  Wszalek, who recorded her 17th career solo shutout, also stopped a 30-yard attempt by sophomore Heidi Sabatura (Lawrenceville, N.J./Pennington) in the 21st minute and made a diving save on a shot by Ryan in the 23rd minute.  She finished with five saves in getting her first shutout of the season.

Kranich made eight saves and helped keep the Wildcats in the game.  In the first half she made a leaping save on a shot by sophomore Amalya Clayton (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) in the 33rd minute and stopped a point-blank shot by Clayton in the 40th minute.  She also made two saves, one on a shot by Clayton and another by Tisinger, in the final five minutes of regulation.

For the game JMU held a 13-9 advantage on shots.

"I thought we wore them out," JMU coach Dave Lombardo said.  "Villanova's a talented, technical team, but I thought we had the better quality depth and that showed up late in the game.

"Players who really stood out (in the two tournament games) were Diane Wszalek for allowing only one goal and making a pivotal stop on the penalty kick against Villanova, and Teresa Rynier (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley).  Teresa didn't have her best weekend, but she commanded so much attention from other teams' defenders it freed up other people.

"I'd like to also credit freshmen Olivia Tomoff (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Haley Miller (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) for changing our intensity mentality, particularly in the second half today."
