UCLA men defeat Notre Dame 1-0

Updated: September 4, 2010
The No. 5/11 UCLA men's soccer team won its 2010 season opener, shutting out No. 18 Notre Dame, 1-0, in game one of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic in Bloomington, IN. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Hollingshead scored the game's only goal in the 23rd minute. Redshirt junior Brian Rowe earned the shutout in goal, making seven saves.

UCLA generated plenty of offense in the first half, totaling 10 shots. Hollingshead had a shot saved in the fifth minute, and Eder Arreola had a pair of shots come close, the first being saved in the 21st minute and the second going wide left in the 23rd. But just half a minute after Arreola's miss, the Bruins came back to score what ended up being the game-winning goal. At 22:54, Hollingshead gave UCLA the lead on a shot to the upper right corner. Freshman midfielder Kelyn Rowe earned the assist.

Notre Dame had more scoring opportunities in the second half, outshooting UCLA, 12-4, in the period, but Rowe and the Bruin defense held firm to preserve the shutout. Rowe had four of his seven saves in the second half.

UCLA's underclassmen saw the majority of playing time in the contest, with five freshmen (Victor Chavez, Kelyn Rowe, Andrew Tusaazemajja, Reid Hukari and Joe Sofia) and two sophomores (Matt Wiet and Ryan Hollingshead) starting alongside four juniors (Brian Rowe, Shawn Singh, Andy Rose and Eder Arreola). Off the bench were two freshmen (Zack Foxhoven and Reed Williams) and three sophomores (Dakota Collins, Michael Roman and Evan Raynr).

The Bruins (1-0) will next face 20th-ranked Indiana on Sunday, Sept. 5. The game will be televised live on the Big Ten Network at 11 am PT.
