Indiana men fall to California

September 4, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A dominating 22-shot performance from the Hoosier attack was not enough to give head coach Todd Yeagley a victory in his Indiana coaching debut as it dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime decision to California in the season opener at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.

Indiana pressured California from the start and dominated possession, reeling off shot after shot but unable to get the ball past goalkeeper David Bingham, who finished the night with seven saves.

“It was tough to give up (a goal) late, playing well for a good portion of that game,” Yeagley said. “We have to take a lot of positive from our performance, generating 22 shots and creating opportunities we didn’t get shot on. Our attack was pretty effective and I thought we played with good discipline. We have to get ready for UCLA. They are very talented.”

The Golden Bears finished with just 10 shots on the day but had two that counted in the final tally, with Servando Carrasco giving them a 1-0 lead at 29:01 off a short corner kick. Hector Jimenez took the short corner, playing the ball to Davis Paul. Paul rolled the ball back to Jimenez, who brought it to the right side of the net. A short roll to Carrasco led to a shot that snuck under IU goalkeeper Luis Soffner for the score.

Indiana answered seven minutes later, with junior Will Bruin recording his first goal of the 2010 season. Freshman Harrison Petts, who earned his first collegiate start tonight, played the ball over to Bruin on the right side, who took a shot across his body and buried it into the lower left for the score. Bruin paced the IU attack with seven shots on the night, while Petts added four.

It was all Indiana in the first half leading up to the game-tying goal. With just under 20 minutes to play, Petts got off a shot that forced Bingham to make a leaping save, pushing the ball over the crossbar. Just before Bruin tied up the match, freshman Nikita Kotlov sent in a driving shot that bounced out of Bingham’s hand before he was able to recover possession.

The Hoosiers went into the lockerroom holding a 10-1 shot advantage and 4-1 lead in corner kicks.

IU got off a flurry of shots in the 67th minute, beginning with one from Bruin that was stopped by Bingham. The rebound landed at the foot of Kotlov, but Bingham was again able earn the save. With just over 20 minutes to play in regulation, sophomore Joe Tolen took a chance from distance that Bingham was forced to go to the ground to stop.

With time winding down in regulation Bruin took a low line-drive shot that was again stopped by Bingham. Bingham was unable to control the ball, but the rebound bounced out to a Cal player to stifle the threat.

After an overtime period which saw just a single shot, off the foot of Tolen, California sealed the win with Davis’ low roller at 106:53.

A total of four true freshman saw action for Indiana tonight, with Kotlov and Petts earning a spot in the starting lineup. Blake Wise and Jacob Bushue came in off the bench for IU

In the first match of the Classic, No. 5 UCLA defeated Notre Dame, 1-0.
