James Madison women beat Liberty
September 4, 2010
LYNCHBURG, Va., Sept. 3, 2010 - A goal by senior Cate Tisinger (Clifton, Va./Centreville) was all the James Madison women's soccer team needed Friday night in a 1-0 victory at Liberty.
Tisinger's winning score came with 16:29 left in the match. She received a pass from senior Teresa Rynier (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) and delivered a 25-yard shot into the net.
The Dukes improved to 3-1-0 while Liberty dropped to 1-2-2.
JMU out-shot the Flames 19-5, but Liberty goalkeeper Ashley Nyholt stymied the Dukes' attack by stopping eight shots. Dukes' redshirt senior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) made two saves to post her second consecutive shutout.
"We grinded that one out," said head coach Dave Lombardo. "We played pretty well, particularly in the second half when we created a lot of chances.
"Credit Liberty, though. They dug in and played really solid defense. Their goalkeeper came up big with about four big-time saves. But eventually we wore them down and scored. It was a good result on the road."
NOTES:
* Tisinger's goal was her 20th career score and increased her career points total to 61. She moved into sole possession of 12th place on JMU's career goals list and moved from 15th to tied for 11th on the school career points list.
* Rynier, who set the JMU career assist record as a junior in 2009, recorded her first assist of the 2010 season. Her school-record assist total now stands at 41.
* Wszalek posted her 18th career solo shutout and her 24th overall (solo and shared) career shutout. She's in second place on JMU's career shutout list, trailing record-holder Jessica Hussey (2002-05), who had 21 career solo shutouts. Wszalek's in fourth place on the overall career shutout list, trailing Cheryl Carr (1991-94), who had 25 overall shutouts.
