UCLA men fall to Indiana 5-1

Updated: September 6, 2010
Preseason All-American Will Bruin recorded a hat trick to lead No. 20 Indiana to a 5-1 win over No. 5 UCLA at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.

Indiana (1-1) struck first in the ninth minute of the game, when Alec Purdie sent a ball to Bruin to the left side of the goal. Bruin follwed with a low shot from close range for his first of three goals on the day. UCLA tied the game at 25:26 on a goal by Ryan Hollingshead. Kelyn Rowe sent a ball into the box that was bounced around. Hollingshead settled the ball and finished for his second goal in as many games. But Indiana reclaimed the lead just half a minute later after being awarded a penalty kick on what was called a foul in the penalty box. Andy Adlard converted the penalty kick to give Indiana the 2-1 lead.

UCLA had a good opportunity to even the score again early in the second half, when Rowe made a nice move and sent a shot from the right side in the 50th minute, but Indiana goalkeeper Luis Soffner made a save on the play. Andrew Tusaazemajja also had a shot opportunity in the 53rd minute, but his header went wide. The Hoosiers blew open the game shortly thereafter, scoring two goals in a 1:10 span. Nikita Kotlov took a shot from 12 yards out that was saved by UCLA goalkeeper Brian Rowe, but the rebound came to Purdie, who scored with a shot to the lower right corner at 56:06. Bruin struck again with his second goal at 57:16 after making a run up the middle and getting past UCLA's defense before sending a shot past Brian Rowe into the lower left. Bruin's third goal came at 67:40 off an assist by Adlard.

Despite the growing deficit, the Bruins did not give up. At 81:48, Eder Arreola had what appeared to be a sure goal cleared off the line by Indiana defender Caleb Konstanski. After the resulting corner kick, Zack Zerrenner's shot was saved by Soffner.

UCLA (1-1) returns to action on Thursday with a home game against UC Riverside at Drake Stadium at 7 pm.Ā
