Maryland men draw with Boston College

Updated: September 11, 2010

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - After surrendering an early penalty kick goal, the No. 9 Maryland men's soccer rallied for a score and held on defensively for a 1-1 tie at No. 5 Boston College Friday night.

Maryland (1-1-1, 0-0-1 ACC) answered with a Billy Cortes header in the 60th minute to tie the match after BC's Conor Fitzpatrick edged his penalty kick attempt past Terp goalkeeper Zac MacMath at 18:30.

MacMath tied a career-high with six saves in the match while Cortes, who was assisted by Doug Rodkey on the lone Terrapin score, paced Maryland offensively with his second goal of the young season. BC outshot Maryland, 19-14, for the first time in 2010. Boston College falls to 2-0-1 on the year.

"This was a very hard-fought game and at the end of the day, a fair result," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "In the first half I thought Boston College came out very strong but in the second half I thought we took control of the match. I'm pleased with the effort and the character our team showed tonight."

Maryland will need to recover quickly as it travels to Loyola (Md.) for a midweek match on Tuesday.
