CHARLOTTESVILLE – The second-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team scored two goals early in the first half and held on for the shutout of Marist, 2-0, Tuesday night at Klöckner Stadium. Brian Ownby (Glen Allen, Va.) led the Cavaliers with a goal and an assist.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improved to 3-0-1 overall and extended its unbeaten streak to 20 games. Additionally, the Cavaliers extended their unbeaten home streak to 13 contests.

Marist’s record went to 2-3 with the loss.

Virginia scored its first goal in the ninth minute, when Ownby found room on the left side of the left field, dribbled past a defender and crossed the ball in front of the goal. Junior Jimmy Simpson (Warrenton, Va.) one-touched the ball into the back of the net from five yards away to give UVa the 1-0 lead.

For Simpson, it was his team-high third goal of the year. He has scored in three-consecutive contests for the Cavaliers.

Virginia added on an insurance goal in the 16th minute. Junior Felipe Libreros (Oldsmar, Fla.) passed a ball to Ownby on the right side, and Ownby fired a shot to the far post from 12 yards out. Marist goalkeeper Joe Pilla was unable to make the save and the Cavaliers went up 2-0.

It was Ownby’s first goal of the 2010 season and Libreros’ first-career point with the assist.

UVa goalkeeper Diego Restrepo (West Palm Beach, Fla.) had six saves and posted his second shutout of the season (18th of his career).

Pilla had four saves for the Red Foxes.
