LIU women beat Princeton

Princeton, N.J. - Junior Toni Smith scored in the ninth minute and the Long Island University women's soccer team collected its fourth shutout of the year to collect a 1-0 win over Princeton on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium on Friday night. The victory was the 100th of LIU head coach Tracey Bartholomew's career as she saw her squad improve to 5-1-1 on the year.



Smith's goal came off a throw-in from classmate Ariana Calderon when she corralled the ball at the corner of the 18-yard box and then arched her shot over Princeton keeper Kristin Watson for the decisive marker. The Tigers (3-2) tried to get the equalizer, putting three shots on net in the first half, but the Long Island defense was up to the task and held on for the win.



Freshman Jessica Sexton made four saves in the game for her second career shutout. Watson also finished with four saves for Princeton. LIU held a 10-8 advantage in shots and its defense was able to negate a 7-1 edge in corner kicks for Princeton.



Bartholomew, who is already the winningest coach in the program's history, reached the 100-win plateau in her 11th season and stands at 100-88-10 in her career. The Blackbirds have gone unbeaten in five straight games (4-0-1) and improved to an impressive 4-0-1 on the road this season.



The meeting was the first between Long Island and Princeton and helped LIU improve to 2-0 against Ivy League opponents this season. The Blackbirds will face Columbia at home



The Blackbirds return to action on Monday, Sept. 20 at Iona.
