Playing in front of the 10th-largest regular season crowd in NCAA history (8,717), UCLA withstood not only a partisan crowd but an aggressive Cal Poly attack, tying the Mustangs in double overtime, 0-0, Friday evening in San Luis Obispo.

 

Cal Poly (2-2-1) outshot the 17th-ranked Bruins, 22-11. Both defenses had strong showings to keep a clean slate. Bruin goalkeeper Brian Rowe made seven saves on the night, tying his season-best, and Cal Poly's Patrick McLain had four saves. For Rowe, it was his third shutout in five games this season.

 

Freshman forward Reed Williams led UCLA (3-1-1) in shots with three and had shots saved by McLain in both the 28th and 73rd minutes. A trio of Cal Poly players - David Zamora, Patrick Sigler and Junior Burgos - had five shots each, with Rowe saving a pair of shots from Zamora and Sigler.

 

With just 1:26 remaining in the second overtime period, Burgos picked up his second yellow card, forcing the Mustangs to play a man down. The Bruins had little time to capitalize, however, and missed their lone shot during the advantage, with a Ryan Hollingshead shot going wide left with 18 seconds left on the clock.

 

The Bruins' shutout was their second consecutive and third overall. UCLA will next host San Diego on Sunday, Sept. 19 at Drake Stadium at 2 pm.
