UC Irvine men fall to Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The No. 8 UC Irvine men's soccer team (5-1) lost 2-0 at Sacramento State Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.


The Hornets got on the board early as Fernando Cabadas passed the ball to Christ Bettencourt who knocked it inside the far post in the 5th minute. Chris Bettencourt hit a through ball to Adam Bettencourt for a one-on-one with the keeper with Bettencourt finding the back of the net for a 2-0 Sacramento State lead in the 52nd minute.


Junior goalkeeper Andrew Fontein (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS) had zero saves in the loss. Keeper Cesar Castillo had seven saves for the Hornets.

The ‘Eaters had 20 shots and 10 corner kicks in the match to Sacramento State’s eight shots and three corner kicks but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.  


The ‘Eaters will head to Las Vegas, Nev. Friday to face No. 17 CSU Bakersfield in the UNLV Rebel Classic at 4:30 p.m. at Johann Field.
