UC Irvine men beat Bakersfield

Las Vegas, Nevada – Junior goalkeeper Andrew Fontein set the UC Irvine school record for shutouts as the No. 9 UC Irvine men’s soccer team (6-1) blanked Cal State Bakersfield, 4-0 at the UNLV Rebel Classic at Johann Field Friday.

 

Fontein, who has six shutouts in the first seven games of the season, becomes UCI’s all-time leader with 15 in his career. Fontein stands alone atop the record book, passing Ryan Mathy (2002-05) and Cameron Rossi (2001-04) who held the previous record of 14. Fontein recorded five saves in the victory.

 

UC Irvine got on the board with a chip shot over the goalie by junior Miguel Ibarra at 34:02 on a pass from Spencer Thompson. Junior Joel Bagby followed with a header from 10-yards out at 36:50 to give the Anteaters the 2-0 advantage at the half.

 

Senior Gray Bailey blasted a shot from 20-yards out at the 63:44 mark then junior Brett Berman scored at 71:55 to round out the UC Irvine scoring.

 

The Anteaters  will play host UNLV Sunday (Sept. 26) at 1:00 p.m. in the final match of the tournament.
