Indiana men beat Penn State
September 26, 2010
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – It came down to one last shot. With 11 seconds left in regulation and the game tied at 2-all, junior forward Will Bruin powered home his team-leading sixth goal of the season to give the Hoosiers a 3-2 win at No. 20 Penn State Friday night in State College, Pa.
With the win, Indiana (4-3, 1-0 Big Ten) is now 17-0-3 in Big Ten openers, and 10-0 in conference openers on the road. No. 20 Penn State falls to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
“It was a great result tonight, and in exciting fashion,” said head coach Todd Yeagley. “We went down 2-1 and we had a lot of good opportunities, but for the guys not to lose that fight and that spirit, you could feel it coming. When the second (goal) came, it was just a matter of time.
“It is a great win for the team. I love the spirit they played with tonight. Penn State is a very good team and this will go a long way to help up keep building.”
Freshman Nikita Kotlov gave Indiana a 1-0 lead at 8:07, putting home his second goal of the season. Kotlov took a powerful shot from the left, but it looked as if Penn State goalkeeper Warren Gross would punch it out of harms way. However his punch carried the ball up and over the line for the score.
Matheus Braga tied the match up at 1-1 at 39:57 when a poor clearance by Indiana left him all alone 12 yards out on the left. He shot to the lower right past the outstretched arms of Soffner.
Penn State put home the go-ahead goal at 69:46 when Corey Hertzog headed home a serve from Matt Smallwood. It was Indiana’s turn to answer back with a goal from Harrison Petts at 77:37. Kotlov had the ball in the box and got it to Petts on the right side. The freshman calmly placed it around the keeper and into the lower left for his second goal of the season.
It was then up to Bruin, who finished the night with four shots. It was a wild final 20 seconds of play when Penn State had what it thought was the go-ahead goal nullified as the linesman’s flag was up for the offsides call before the shot was taken. Indiana countered when Andy Adlard played the ball to Bruin on the right. After a couple of dribbles, the junior unleashed a rocket that went into the lower left, giving Bruin his first game-winning goal of the season.
The high-scoring affair was on from the start when just over five minutes into the match goalkeeper Luis Soffner was forced to come up big, making a save of Hertzog’s 1-on-1 attempt. Soffner was called upon again to make a diving save to his left on a hard shot from Justin Lee in the 29th minute. With 23 to play in the first half, Rich Balchan took the ball 50 yards on his own but was denied on his 1-on-1 shot by Gross.
The Hoosiers held a slim 6-5 lead in shots at the half, with both teams taking a pair of corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.
With seven minutes elapsed in the second half, Bruin broke free and had a 1-on-1 look at the net but sent a slow roller wide.
Petts had a pair of shots in the box with under 23 to play in regulation, both of which nearly made it into the back of the net. His first shot was saved by Gross, and his second shot was cleared off the line by a Nittany Lion defender.
Indiana finished with 13 shots on the night and a total of five corner kicks, three of which came in the second half. Soffner recorded a season-high six saves in the victory.
Indiana kicks off a three-match homestand on Wednesday, Sept. 29 when it faces in-state foe Evansville. Match time is 7:30 p.m. on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
