Boston College men fall to Connecticut

Connecticut(m) sophomore forward Carlos Alvarez scored the decisive goal in the 54th minute and classmate Stephane Diop doubled the host’s lead in the 68th as the third-ranked Huskies defeated No. 15 Boston College, 2-0, before 1,494 fans at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
The teams played a scoreless first half before Connecticut junior Tony Cascio assisted on Alvarez’s go-ahead goal at 53:44. Alvarez then set up Diop for the Huskies’ second goal of the match at 67:19.
BC junior goalkeeper Justin Luthy registered a career-high 11 saves in the losing effort. The 6-foot, 165-pound Dublin, Ohio resident, stopped all six first-half shots on goal and BC was credited with a team save in the 25th minute. Luthy totaled five saves in the second half.
BC falls to 4-2-2 overall with each of its two defeats coming on the road against ranked opponents (It lost at No. 11 Duke on Friday, Sept. 24, 1-0). BC will return home next to face conference-opponent NC State on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
Sophomore midfielder Kyle Bekker notched a team-high four shots and nearly missed netting his second goal of the season in the 78th minute with a left-footed strike from 26 yards out that sailed just high.
BC was outshot 19-11 in the match. Senior Karl Reddick and junior Edvin Worley tallied two shots apiece.
The Huskies, who improved three spots – to No. 3 – in the weekly NSCAA poll, improve their record to 7-0-1.
