Akron men beat Florida Atlantic

October 2, 2010
AKRON, Ohio –Kofi Sarkodie scored two goals and Michael Nanchoff recorded three assists as the No. 1 University of Akron men's soccer team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Florida Atlantic Friday in front of 3,232 fans at Lee Jackson Field.

Although the Zips (7-0-1, 2-0-0 Mid-American Conference) saw their consecutive game shutout streak come to a close Wednesday night at No. 19 Ohio State, they extended two more impressive runs with their victory over the Owls Friday.

UA extended its home unbeaten streak to 30 games (29-0-1), which matches the fourth longest in NCAA history. Additionally, Akron is now unbeaten in its last 25 MAC contests (23-0-2), including postseason play, which matches the sixth-longest run in college soccer history.

It was a dominating performance for the Zips overall as UA owned large advantages for shots (16-2), shots on goal (7-0) and corner kicks (6-1). UA held possession for the majority of the game and held the Owls (2-4-1, 0-1) without a shot until midway through the second half.

Akron wasted little time finding the net with a pair of goals coming off a set pieces early in the game.

Akron took a 1-0 lead just nine minutes in when Darlington Nagbe was fouled near the top of the box to set up a 24-yard free kick by Nanchoff. Nanchoff's kick deflected off a wall of defenders and to the right side of the box where Sarkodie crossed it into the net from five yards out.

Then, in the 11th minute Nanchoff served a corner kick into the box where it found Perry Kitchen, who buried it into the net with a header from close range to make it 2-0.

Nanchoff and Sarkodie teamed up once again for the game's final goal in the 53rd minute. After receiving a through ball from Nanchoff in the middle of the box, Sarkodie chipped a shot over the keeper's head to provide the game's final margin.

The Zips will next head to Oakland Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. kick off against the Golden Grizzlies.
