Chestnut Hill, MA (Sunday, October 3, 2010) – The
Boston College women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in a 3-2 overtime loss to ACC foe Virginia on Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville, Virginia. The No. 2 Eagles are now 9-1-1 and 2-1-0 in the ACC, while No. 9 Virginia is now 8-2-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the conference.
This was the final game of BC’s four-game road trip as the Eagles finished up 3-1-0. Boston College will next host No. 7 Maryland on Thursday, October 7 at the Newton Soccer Field (7 p.m.).
BC sophomore Victoria DiMartino scored both goals in the loss to increase her league lead to 11 total goals. It was DiMartino’s seventh multiple point game this season. She scored in the 20th minute to tie the match at 1-1. DiMartino gave BC a 2-1 lead with her 11th goal of the season in the 55th minute of the match.
Virginia scored first in the fourth minute on a goal by Lauren Alwine. Colleen Flanagan scored her first goal of the season in the 76th minute to tie the match. The game-winning goal came in the 96th minute off the foot of Meghan Lenczyk.
BC’s offense was led by DiMartino and Kristen Mewis as each player had five shots apiece. Brooke Knowlton had three shots in the match. The Eagles had 16 shots to 14 by Virginia. BC held the edge in corner kicks 10-4.
Junior goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni had eight saves in the loss, while Virginia’s goalkeeper Chantel Jones had five saves.
