EVANSTON, Ill. –- Ohio State’s Paige Maxwell broke a scoreless tie with a goal inthe ninth minute of overtime, lifting the Buckeyes to a 1-0 victory over Northwestern Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
Maxwell scored off a header after the ball found its way to her during a scrum infront of the Wildcat net. The overtime loss is the first of the season for NU, which has now played five matches that have gone past regulation (1-1-3).
Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) made four saves for Northwestern(5-6-3, 1-3-1 Big Ten), including a sliding stop in the final minute of the first half to preserve the tie into an extra session.
The Wildcats’ best scoring chance of the game came midway through the second half. Caroline Dagley (San Rafael, Calif./The Branson School) made a run down the left side of the field and crossed the ball just shy of the end line to a sliding Leigh Jakes (McDonough, Ga./Eagle’s Landing). Jakes was able to get a shot off but put it
right at an Ohio State defender who cleared the ball off the line.
"It was a game where we definitely battled, but there were details here and there that we missed," said head coach Stephanie Foster. "Some we were able to get away with, but in the end it caught up to us. We need to be more focused and ready to deal with those details."
Emily Langston (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) and Bo Podkopacz (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) also registered a shot on goal each in the match for the Wildcats.
Northwestern will hit the road next weekend for a Sunday match at Michigan State. The contest will be televised live on the Big Ten Network at 11 a.m. CT.
