Fairleigh-Dickinson men beat St. Francis (PA)

October 18, 2010
The Fairleigh Dickinson men’s soccer team played another excellent game Sunday afternoon as they defeated St. Francis (PA), 1-0, at University Field in Teaneck.  St. Francis (PA) came into the game atop the Northeast Conference standings.  With the victory, the Knights improve to 6-6-1 (2-3-1 NEC) on the season, while the Red Flash fall to 7-4-1 (3-1-1 NEC) overall.

The Knights dominated from the opening kickoff as they put pressure on the Red Flash all afternoon.  In the 30th minute of the first half, freshman Michael Calderon (San Jose, Costa Rica) scored his second career goal in as many games as he dribbled through the defense and let one rip from about 20 yards out to put the Knights up, 1-0.

Both teams did not score the rest of the first half, and the Knights went into the break up one goal.  Fairleigh Dickinson outshot St. Francis (PA), 7-4, over the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Knights continued to put pressure on the Red Flash defense as they ripped off eight more shots.  The home team almost had two more goals in the second half.  Senior Samson Malijani (Lusaka, Zambia) just missed on a great opportunity, and Calderon fired again from way out and hit the top of the crossbar.  However, the Knights were able to play well enough defensively to hang on for the 1-0 victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Jacob Lissek (Rock Canyon, CO) picked up the shutout and the victory for the Knights.  He made five saves.  The Red Flash split goalie duty, and Daniel Valcicak and Thomas McWilliams made three and two saves, respectively.

For the game, the Knights outshot the Red Flash, 15-9, including five on goal.  The Knights have now fired 43 shots on goal in their last two games as they have gone 1-0-1 in competition.

“I thought we played well again today,” said Head Coach Seth Roland.  “We were very solid defensively, and we created numerous opportunities in attack.  This weekend was a positive step forward for us, and we hope that we can continue to play this well.”

The Knights are back in action this Thursday, October 21, as they travel to New Britain, CT to take on Central Connecticut State in the first of three-straight Northeast Conference road contests.  Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
