James Madison women beat Delaware
October 18, 2010
HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 17, 2010 - Behind freshman Lauren Wilson's (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown) hat trick, James Madison beat Delaware 4-0 in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer Sunday afternoon at the JMU Soccer Complex.
The Dukes, who recorded their third straight win, improved their overall record to 10-6-0 and their CAA record to 6-2-0. Delaware dropped to 5-10-1 overall and 1-6-1 in league play.
Wilson tied the school single-game scoring record with the 19th three-goal game in school history. It was the Dukes' first hat trick of the season and the sixth hat trick ever by a JMU freshman.
Another record was set by Dukes' redshirt senior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East), who needed to make only two stops to get her sixth shutout of the season and her school-record 22nd career shutout. She broke the record of 21 she had shared with Jessica Hussey (2002-05).
"This was a tough game. It took us a long time to unlock Delaware's defense but when we did we kind of got it rolling," JMU Head Coach Dave Lombardo said. "It was a great effort today by Lauren Wilson. Our defense was solid and it was nice for Diane to get the school record (on her home field)."
All four of JMU's goals came in the final 20 minutes of the game. Wilson netted the first three, starting with an unassisted score with 19:01 on the clock. Following a JMU corner kick, the ball came out of the box in the middle of the field to Wilson, who connected on a left-footed shot from 19 yards out to the right corner of the goal.
Less than 10 minutes later, Wilson struck again. Redshirt sophomore Kelly Germain (McLean, Va./Langley) hit the ball on a diving header that sent the ball in the direction of the goal about 35 yards from the endline. Wilson sped ahead of two Delaware defenders to collect the ball and dribbled into the box heading toward the left corner of the goal. She got past junior goalkeeper Breanna Stemler (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) with a move to the left and shot on an empty net from close range. The score came with 9:28 remaining.
Senior Cate Tisinger (Clifton, Va./Centreville) set up Wilson's third score with a pass from near the left touchline into the middle of the box. Germain controlled the ball and sent a pass across the box to Miller, who knocked the ball into the goal from seven yards out with 2:15 on the clock.
Germain got her third assist of the day on the Dukes' fourth goal, sending a pass ahead to Tisinger, who scored on a six-yard shot with just 18 seconds on the clock.
JMU held a 21-9 shot advantage, and Stemler made three saves.
NOTES:
* Diane Wszalek now has 28 total career shutouts (solo and shared) and is just one shutout away from the school record of 29 currently shared by Jessica Hussey (2002-05) and Stacy Bilodeau (1994-97).
* Cate Tisinger increased her school career goals total to 23 and her career assist total to 23. She moved into a tie for 11th on JMU's career goals list, and she shares that spot with Kristi Palmaccio (1993-96). She moved into a tie for sixth on JMU's career assist list, a spot she shares with Therese Wolden (1995-98).
* Kelly Germain's three assists was one short of the school record of four, set by teammate Teresa Rynier last season. It marked the 12th time a JMU player had handed out at least three assists in a match. That includes a three-assist game by Kelly's older sister Kim in the 2006 season.
