NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 24, 2010 - Five was the lucky number for the James Madison women's soccer team Sunday as the Dukes got goals from five players en route to their fifth straight win, a 5-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory at Old Dominion Sunday afternoon.
JMU boosted its overall record to 12-6-0 and its league record to 8-2-0 as the Dukes clinched second place in the CAA standings. ODU dropped to 4-11-1 overall and 2-8-0 in the CAA.
"Today we got off to a fast start, got a lot of people involved with scoring, and had a total team effort," said JMU Head Coach Dave Lombardo. "We're playing our best soccer of the season at a time of the year when it's important for us to do that."
The Dukes scored on their first shot of the game as freshman Lauren Wilson (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown) received a long ball from senior Corinna Strickland (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and beat ODU keeper one-on-one for a goal just 2:28 into the match. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) also got an assist as she started the play with a ball played to Strickland.
ODU evened the score on a goal by Kate Kelly in the 24th minute, but less than two minutes later the Dukes were back on top. Senior Teresa Rynier (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) hit a shot from 15 yards that deflected off a Monarch defender and into the net in the 26th minute. Redshirt sophomore Kelly Germain (McLean, Va./Langley) was credited with an assist.
JMU took a 3-1 lead into intermission after sophomore Amalya Clayton (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) scored an unassisted goal on a 25-yard shot in the 30th minute.
The Dukes' fourth goal came in the 70th minute by junior Yolie Anderson-Golhor (Ottawa, Ontario/Louis-Riel). Rynier made the final pass to Anderson-Golhor and recorded her 48th career assist, increasing her school record. Senior Cate Tisinger (Clifton, Va./Centreville) also earned an assist on the play.
In the closing minutes of the game redshirt sophomore Dana O'Brien (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) scored her first JMU goal to push the Dukes' lead to 5-1. Wilson and Anderson-Golhor both assisted on the goal.
JMU outshot ODU 20-13, and Wszalek made four saves, upping her career saves total to 303. She moved into third place on the Dukes' all-time saves list, passing Stacy Bilodeau (1994-97), who made 300 career stops.
ODU starting goalkeeper Brianna Alvarado made five saves in the first half, and Laura Bush had two saves in the second half.
