Utah Valley women lose to Houston Baptist

HOUSTON, Texas --Ā Utah Valley saw its 14-game unbeaten streak against Great West Conference foes end on Saturday in a narrow 1-0 loss at Houston Baptist. The loss also ends a six game winning streak overall for the Wolverines (9-8-1, 5-1-0).
"It was a good streak and I'm happy with the way the girls have played in conference during that time," said head coach Brent Anderson. "But I think we came out a little too lightly today. You have to step out on the field and be ready to play 100 percent or you'll end up in the loss column."
UVU -- the top seed in the West Division -- will open next week's conference tournament back on the campus of Houston Baptist University against the fourth seed in the East Division, Delaware State. The Wolverines defeated the Hornets 6-1 to open last season's GWC Tournament.
"We're in a good position for the tournament, maybe even better now because I think today will help us focus more, be sharper in practice and come ready to play next week," Anderson said.
In Saturday's game, a goal off of a corner kick just 11 minutes into the game proved to be the difference. The Huskies (5-13-1, 2-4-0) were able to shift into defensive mode the rest of the way and kept UVU's scoring opportunities to a minimum.
Houston Baptist finished with a 10-7 edge in shots including 4-1 on goal. Kelsey Reichow was credited with the game's only goal.
Complete brackets and game times for next week's conference tournament will be released by Monday.
