UC Irvine men lose to Northridge

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 7 UC Irvine men's soccer team (13-1-3, 6-0-2) lost 2-1 to Cal State Northridge Wednesday night in Big West Conference action at Anteater Stadium.


Junior keeper Andrew Fontein (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS) made a diving save on the left post after a free kick by Rafael Garcia from just outside the top of the box in the 20th minute. Senior Corey Attaway (Chino HS) took a free kick for the ‘Eaters just inside the midfield line and sent it into the box. The ball was knocked down inside the box by senior Joel Bagby (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) and sent over to sophomore Zach Olow (Poway HS) who found the back of the net to put UCI up 1-0 in the 35th minute. The Matadors tied the match in the 58th minute as Joe Franco threw the ball into the box where it was collected by Daniel Yoon who found the back of the net. With the clock winding down in the final minute of regulation, Rafael Garcia took a corner kick for Northridge and placed it at the top of the box where Mattias Bonvehi made a diving header that found its way into the net to put CSUN up 2-1 with 48 seconds to go.


Fontein had five saves for the Anteaters. Keeper Michael Abalos had two saves for the Matadors.

The ‘Eaters close out the regular season Saturday as they travel cross-county to face Cal State Fullerton at 7:00 p.m. at Titan Stadium. UCI can clinch the Big West regular season title with a victory over the Titans.
