Umass men lose to Saint Louis

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A pair of second half goals gave host Charlotte a 2-0 win over the UMass men's soccer team on Friday night dropping the Minutemen from 3rd to 7th in the Atlantic 10 standings. UMass will face Saint Louis which stands in 5th-place after defeating Rhode Island. Despite a 17-to-1 shot advantage in the first half, UMass (5-5-7, 4-2-2 A-10) managed to keep the 49ers off the score board going into halftime tied 0-0. In the 49th minute, Donnie Smith earned Charlotte a corner and his set piece delivery found the back of the net on the service giving the 49ers a 1-0 lead. In the 80th minute, Charlotte (12-5-0, 7-1-0 A-10) went up 2-0 when Evan James played a nifty pass to Will Mayhew who converted for his third goal of the season. Of the 17 shots in the first half, only five were on target enough for UMass keeper Chris Piekos to make a save. The 49ers attempted just six in the second half. For the game, Charlotte out shot the Minutemen 23-to-4 and earned 12 corners to just 2 for UMass. Piekos finished the game with five saves - all in the first half. Charlotte keeper Klay Davis earned the shutout needing to make just one save. Charlotte remains in first place in the Atlantic 10 with 21 points. La Salle (16), Fordham (15), St. Bonaventure (15), Saint Louis (15), and Temple (15) round out the top six teams. UMass sits in 7th place with 14 points - just two points ahead of Duquesne, Xavier, and Richmond.
