Utah Valley women beat Delaware State

Updated: November 6, 2010
HOUSTON -- Six different players scored as Utah Valley rolled to an 8-0 win over Delaware State in the quarterfinals of the Great West Conference Tournament on Friday at Houston Baptist University. The eight goals is a season high and the most the Wolverines (10-8-1) have scored in coach Brent Anderson's tenure and the most since scoring 11 against Delaware State in 2005. Katey Turner scored twice and had an assist and Ashley Burdett also scored a pair of goals for the Wolverines (10-8-1). Nicole Archibald Spencer and Kelsey Kimball Cook each had a goal and an assist while Brianne Larsen and Haley Curtis each scored their first goal of the season. Sara Walker, Lexi Dunn and Kendra Buchanan assisted on goals. "We knew coming in we have to take this game by game," said Anderson. "I'm glad we came out and gave a good team effort and got everybody involved. In a tournament it's good to get everyone that experience." For Turner, she now has 24 career goals and has six goals and three assists over four Great West Tournament games in her career. "She turned it on. She really rises to the big occasion and we need her to continue to play well to be successful. Really we need everyone to play that to be successful," Anderson said. The Wolverines scored four times in the games' first 21 minutes to create a big 5-0 cushion by the break. Turner scored both of her goals in the first half - one on a header on a Walker corner kick - and Burdett a goal in each half. Utah Valley limited the Hornets (1-18) to just one shot on goal late in the game and finished with a 25-4 edge in shots including 13-1 on goal. Saturday's semifinal match will start at 7 p.m. CT against host Houston Baptist, winners of a 1-0 match over NJIT. The Wolverines and Huskies split two games this season, with each winning on their home field. UVU lost 1-0 at HBU last week.
