CARY, N.C. – The sixth-seeded Virginia Cavaliers knocked off third-seeded Wake Forest in the quarterfinals of the 2010 ACC Tournament, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at WakeMed Soccer Park. Junior midfielder Hunter Jumper (Plano, Texas) scored the game-winning goal to lift the Cavaliers to victory.
 
With the win, Virginia improves to 11-4-3 on the season and advances to the semifinals for the third-consecutive year. UVa will face second-seeded Maryland on Friday (Nov. 12) at 5:30 p.m. The Terrapins were 2-1 winners over Clemson in Wednesday’s first quarterfinal match.
 
“There are a lot of great memories at Cary over the years and in particular with the past couple of years with the College Cup last year and the ACC Championship last year,” UVa head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We are obviously very, very happy and pleased with the result.”
 
With the loss, Wake Forest ends its season with a record of 8-9-2.
 
Virginia took advantage of a restart in the 47th minute to score its goal. After a Wake Forest foul 30 yards from the goal, Ari Dimas (Chesapeake, Va.) passed the ball to Jumper who blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the net. The goal was Jumper’s first of the season and third of his career.
 
For Dimas, it was his fourth assist of the season, which ties for the team-high.
 
The first half was scoreless and featured just one shot per team. Jumper had the Cavaliers’ sole shot of the period, a blast from 25 yards out that sailed high.
 
Senior goalkeeper Diego Restrepo (West Palm Beach, Fla.), last year’s ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player, has not allowed a goal in his four-career ACC Tournament matches. He had one save against the Demon Deacons for his eighth shutout of the season.
 
Virginia, the 2009 ACC and NCAA Champion, extended its postseason unbeaten streak to nine games. The Cavaliers also continued their hot streak against the Demon Deacons at the ACC Tournament, improving to 11-0-3 vs. Wake Forest in all-time ACC Tournament games.
 
Virginia out-shot the Demon Deacons, 8-6, and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

In the second half, one of our players on the ball noticed that also and we talked about it a little. We made eye contact after we saw nobody was there. He played a good ball and I was lucky enough to get a hit on it. By the time it came to the keeper, it was just a reaction save. It was a great hit and a great feeling."
